Ok, so I have a kick ass comp available to me, but IT WONT RUN HL2!!! I dont know why I've tried everything and nothing works. I think it may be that the card is dead. It's a geforce 8800 GTX newest drivers, tried foring video modes and res's, but stil nothing. All it does is it like... freaks out on start up, the game will load fine (this is HL2 BTW), but when it gets to the title screen it starts freaking out. I don't know how to explain it... Its like a crazy ass fun house. It totally just draws in these big ass colored shapes over everything and it like... idk how to explain it. Everything looks like it's in distorted wireframe and has strange colors applied. I also notice where it sais "Half-life 2" in the center it strangely increses it's resolution size and averlays another menu in a much higher resolution. Also, when I hit "exit game" the confirmation box appears in the lower right had corner and I can't drag it up to visible area of the screen, I just hit enter. Anyways, GAHHH! What the f**k is the problem? I already fiddled with the drivers and the res. Can anyone help me?

how new is the computer? was it a custom build or a prefab? are you getting crazy video problems with any other games, or any other applications for that matter?

Make sure you have the latest DirectX
Start -> Run
Type dxdiag. Test Direct3d.
If you're not having this problem with any other games, try reinstalling hl2.

Lol,m would be ok if ti was like that. It's like... you can see through the ground becuase its just a blob of angular color. Everything is so angular and ridgid, and it like overlays textures everythere. It's like as if the vectors of the wireframing were like blinking in and out of existance. And it is a custom box my friend built. Running 2 Nividia 8800GTX's. I haven't tried the scaling or anything, I think I will @ some point soon.

i don't know if this is true or not but i've heard that the 8800 series runs into problems with systems that aren't running Vista ::shakes fist at Microsoft::
i'm pretty lost honestly, definitely try reinstalling HL2, along with all the normal stuff (clean out your temporary files, defragment, run virus scans, etc). also, you might take a crack at reseating the cards - sometimes they'll run into weird problems if they're not making a solid connection in their PCI slot.

I can check to verify that in about 30minutes after these stupid 500gb hdds finish formating and I can install steam. Ive just built my new system with an 8800GTS 640.

I think your right toad, I've been having a lot of issues playing dys on my 8800GTX, as well as Dark Messiah, Might and Magic.
But most other games the card and computer run fine for me.
But it me it sounds like either something is corrupted, or your cards are over-heating.
Attempting to run other games that are similiar in nature if you can. (Doom3, Dark Messiah, F.E.A.R. Oblivion.) If those also encounter issues, then you know its your computer, and not some HD corruption.

My 8800GTS works just fine, not having any problems with it.

Sounds more like corruption than a heat issue to me. When I've had heat issues, usually the game has started out playing fine and then my framerate has inexplicably dropped as time went on.

well I mean, they are cooled well enough, and it run FEAR and other shooters fine. It just won't run any HL2 games. I have no idea. I should just try turning everything off becuase I still havent tried that although I doubt it would really help.

Did, I scaled it back to DX 8.1 and ran windowed. It gave me some degree of improvement, but it still f**ks up. And when I go to minimize it it seems stable for like a minute then it goes right back. Im pretty sure it's just a scaling problem now as it seems to want to run @ some bizzarly high resolution. Anyways, thanks for the help, I'mma keep hard @ it even though I'm going back in a few days. I'll see you guys later.
